Stitch And Glue Vs Strip Plank

0

Stitch and glue is for chined plywood hulls. strip is for round hulls. i suppose you could strip a chined hull, you can't stitch and glue a round hull, because ply wood doesn't bend that way.. Stitch and glue is definitely quicker. i would estimate about half the time or less of cedar strip. my 2 cedar strip boats probably averaged about 400 hours each.. Best answer: a few years ago i built a stitch and glue kayak from "scratch" -- it took months and i was pretty frustrated many times. a friend bought a kit for the same kayak. he built his in about a month of spare time, had a lot of fun, never got upset and his boat looks gorgeous!.

Wood strip planking boatbuilding. strip planking is a grandchild of the carvel planked of old. when super strong adhesives such as epoxy were developed it became possible to edge glue thin wooden strips of light wood over a temporary frame.. Stitch-and-glue boats have this vulnerable edge grain buried in thickened epoxy and covered with epoxy/glass sheathing. not only that, but the large surface area of the glass covering of all of the joints means that stresses are dissipated into the structure quite gently and evenly.. Stitch and glue is where most "newby" builds start. epoxy is very easy to work with. if you looked around the net, you will see just how many first time builders have been successful with this type of construction..
